Considered a symbol of universal harmony, the Lo Shu square is a magic square of order 3 (3 × 3) that contains the integers from 1 to 9, arranged in such a way that by adding the digits of its different rows, columns and diagonals, we always obtain a magic constant, 15. In this transposition of the Lo Shu square into music, the numbers have been translated into rhythmic values, bichords and pitches (performed with nine woodblocks). The performer ‘reads’ the lines, columns and diagonals of the square using rhythmic cycles of fifteen notes, whilst the piece is divided into nine sections, as many as the numbers in the magic square.
