about

The part of mathematics that deals with rationalizing the interpretations of random phenomena is called the calculus of probabilities. Sometimes, the probability of an event can be calculated directly by weeding out the number of favorable cases from the totality of possible ones. For example, this can be done by rolling two six-sided dice: their possible combinations are 36, and the most unlikely results are number 2 and number 12, which can be obtained with only one combination, out of thirty-six. Number 7, on the other hand, can result from six different combinations out of thirty-six, and is therefore the most probable result.

12 Facce is a music reconstruction of this calculation of favorable cases. By associating six micro-melodies to the six faces, the combinations between the two dice become melodic combinations. These melodic combinations are longer and more articulated with increasing probabilities (more combinations), shorter with decreasing probabilities: whilst the melody of number 2, which opens up the piece, comprises of only two micro-melodies, in the middle of the piece we find number 7, which is represented by six combinations of notes, and therefore by a long melody of twelve notes.
